Tailwind Responsive Design

Introduction

In this lesson, we will learn how to build responsive websites using Tailwind CSS. Tailwind simplifies this process with a mobile-first approach, a clear breakpoint system, and easy-to-use responsive utility classes.

Tailwind’s Breakpoint System

Tailwind CSS uses a mobile-first approach, meaning styles are applied by default to smaller screens, and you add breakpoints to modify the layout for larger screens.

Breakpoints are screen sizes where the layout adjusts to suit different devices, such as tablets and desktops.

Tailwind’s Default Breakpoints:

  • sm - 640px (Small devices like tablets)
  • md - 768px (Medium devices like small laptops)
  • lg - 1024px (Large devices like desktops)
  • xl - 1280px (Extra-large desktops)
  • 2xl - 1536px (Ultra-wide screens)

In Tailwind, you add a breakpoint prefix (e.g. md:) to apply a style only when the screen is at least the size of the breakpoint.

  • On small screens (under 640px), the background is blue.
  • On medium screens (768px and up), the background changes to red.

Mobile-First Approach

Tailwind’s mobile-first design means that styles are applied to small screens by default, and as the screen size increases, you use breakpoints to adjust the layout. This results in a clean, maintainable CSS structure where mobile styles are prioritized.

  • On mobile (default), the text size is small (text-sm).
  • On medium screens (tablets), the text becomes larger (md:text-lg).
  • On large screens (desktops), the text becomes extra-large (lg:text-xl).

Responsive Utility Classes

Almost every utility class in Tailwind can be made responsive by adding the breakpoint prefix (sm:, md:, lg:, xl:). This allows you to change layout, spacing, and other styles at specific screen sizes.

  • The default padding is p-4 (1rem).
  • On small screens (sm:), the padding increases to p-6 (1.5rem).
  • On medium screens (md:), it increases to p-8 (2rem).
  • On large screens (lg:), it increases to p-12 (3rem).

Responsive Layout Adjustments

Tailwind allows you to adjust the layout for different screen sizes.

Responsive Flexbox Layout

  • On small screens, the items stack vertically (flex-col).

  • On small screens, the grid has 1 column.
  • On medium screens, the grid has 2 columns.
  • On large screens, the grid has 3 columns.

Responsive Typography

You can also adjust typography based on screen size using responsive utilities. Tailwind makes it easy to adapt font sizes, line heights, and other typographic properties for various devices.

  • On mobile, the text is text-2xl.
  • On small screens, it increases to text-3xl.
  • On medium screens, it increases to text-4xl.

Hiding/Showing Elements

Tailwind includes utilities that allow you to hide or show elements based on the screen size. This is useful for showing certain content only on specific devices (e.g., hiding large images on mobile or displaying special navigation options on larger screens).

Key Classes:

  • hidden - Hides the element on all screen sizes.
  • block, inline-block - Makes the element visible.
  • sm:hidden, md:block - Show/hide elements at specific breakpoints.

  • The hidden class hides the content by default.
  • On medium screens and above (md:block), the content becomes visible.

Customizing Breakpoints

While Tailwind comes with a set of default breakpoints, you can customize them to suit your project’s needs. This is done in the tailwind.config.js file.

Let’s say you are working on a project where you need a custom extra small (xs) breakpoint for screens smaller than 480px, and you want to adjust your design slightly for ultra-wide screens by modifying the 2xl breakpoint.

The layout needs to:

  • Stacks items vertically on screens smaller than 480px (extra small devices).
  • Changes to two columns at 480px (custom breakpoint) up until 640px (small breakpoint).
  • From 640px (small screens) upwards, we continue adapting the layout to larger screens, like showing three columns at 1024px (large) and more columns for even larger screens.

In your tailwind.config.js file, you can extend the default breakpoints like this:

On screens smaller than 480px:

  • the layout uses grid-cols-1, so all items are stacked vertically in one column.

Between 480px and 640px:

  • At 480px (custom xs), the layout shifts to two columns (xs:grid-cols-2). This behavior only kicks in at 480px and continues until 640px.
  • So between 480px and 640px, the layout is two columns, not one.

From 640px (small screens) onwards:

  • Once the screen reaches 640px (sm), the layout changes to three columns (sm:grid-cols-3).
  • From 1024px (large screens, lg), it expands to four columns (lg:grid-cols-4).
  • Finally, on ultra-wide screens starting at 1440px (2xl), the layout expands to six columns (2xl:grid-cols-6).
